BLUP

Postby txhoneydarlin on Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:38 pm

I have seen a lot of people asking questions about this lately, and in the hopes of helping to clarify (and of helping all of us to play the game better and achieve goals we set for ourselves), I thought that I would post this information that I have found helps my horses and my breeding career.

When you are ready to breed your mare, I highly recommend that she be 100 BLUP and that the stud you select to breed her to be 100 BLUP as well. Yep, it does sometimes cost a bit more money to have your mare covered this way, but in the end, it pays off. The reason is this - when you breed a 100 BLUP mare to 100 BLUP stud (especially if your goal is to have a higher GP), the foal is born with higher inborn skills (IS). This actually helps out with skills when you are training your horse - you end up with higher skills sooner than those that chose to bred their horses before they reached 100 BLUP, and this usually calculates to more wins in the competitions. This in turn helps you as a breeder, as it earns you more money - whether you decide to sell your foal or keep it in your herd for competitions.

There is a pass called Aphrodite's tears that you can purchase that will actually help you raise the IS of your foal - and coupled with the fertility wand, you could end up with 2 foals with a higher GP and IS above 100, which is very desirable, both for training and competitions and for the auctions.

I look forward to seeing other hints from all of you - and hopefully, this helped you understand a bit more about why BLUP is so important when breeding.

A foal will have inborn skills if the AVERAGE of their parents' BLUP is positive, you will get the most inborn skills by having each parent have 100, but some from any combination that has an average greater than 0.

(One of those people who offers 200e coverings with 100 BLUP stallions ;))

I too have a couple of stallions that I offer at 200 to 400. They are always 100 BLUP and will help raise a foals GP and IBS if the mare is also 100 BLUP. I have found that the biggest impact on not having both parents at 100 BLUP is the GP or Genetic Potential. Since the object is to raise that number, focusing solely on the skills is not the best idea. Focus should be placed on is that stallion going to raise the GP in the next generation or will the foal still be in the same GP as I already have. That is why I go after stallions that cost more. They are usually the ones with the higher GP.

You get to see it when you pass the level 4 test.
It will look like this and they are at the bottom of the horses activity list.

Genetics
Stamina 40.62 Galloping 92.37
Speed 67.47 Trotting 19.41
Dressage 77.54 Jumping 61.32

358.73 total potential achieved
Your horse has a BLUP of 100

I'm new at this, so here goes.
Reading through these articles I have come across BLUP several times.
Question: Is this an acronym.

it means Best Linear Unbiased Prediction

It's basically math (parent A + parent B)/2 = foal

Parents with higher BLUP give higher inborn skills to the foal. But it's an average.

All horses start out with BLUP of less than -90 and it can raise to +100 buy training/riding/competing and having lessons as well as gaining some by age.

I find it complicated and with the help of the wonderful people on here am starting to scratch the surface.

So if I breed two 100+ BLUP horses, will the foal automatically have 100+BLUP?

no, every foal starts with -100BLUP, if you breed 2 100BLUP horses together then you will get more inborn skills and a higher GP then you would if you breed 2 non 100BLUP horses together

Just to add a bit to what BeachSide said; The foals can be born with a higher BLUP than -100 if the parents were well trained and if the foal has a higher IS.

OK, I just reread this one and um, the last part of the sentance should read ...if the parents were well trained the foal will have a higher IS. I thought I would fix that one :duh:

The 20 wins aren't that hard to get with a better trained horse or one with a higher than average GP. Don't sweat it.
