COLTS

Postby cuddles361 on Tue Mar 18, 2008 11:41 pm

I'm getting peved. My mare is always going to have colts. No fillys. Just colts. She's a really good mare, my best. But she keeps having colts. Is there somehow you can make them have fillys. Before I rip my head off. The foals turn out great too. And I can make money of them but I need a filly. I'm so fustrated. :grr: :banghead:

You could always use Zeus's Lightening bolt on one of the colts to make it a filly. Unfortunately it is all random just like coat colors. Good luck

Just keep breeding. She may just be more apt to give out colts. I have had mares like that, and then I have mares that only throw fillies. It is the stud(or in real life at least) that determines the gender of his get, so, maybe change the stud that you are using.

Yea I'm changing all the time. Because I don't really have any good studs to breed with I'm just using others.

I assure you, I know the feeling. I never have time to train the colts up to stud-level, so I just sell them; at least, I try to. It's a fact that males just don't sell as well as females. It's rather frustrating. Like everyone said, if it's a really good horse, use a Zeus' lightning bolt. If not, keep breeding and you just might get a filly afterall. :O)

It says there are 43% of males and 57% of femals. The percent I breed is like 90% males 10% females. So fustrating. She's (the mare I'm breeding with) is 18 years 2 months. How many more times can she have colts.

And Flash. Well done with the foals. Was it the fertility wand or did she just have two foals. That happened to me. I was so happy but one was female and one was male. Bummer they were both colts though. But now I just keep getting colts. The more I try though the more chances I have one getting a filly. Fingers crossed thats if I do ever breed with her again.

I'am sure I found it in an EC Forum (forgot which) that the sex of the foal is determined by the date it is born, i.e. odds or evens.

I think, Even date = Colt, Odd date = Filly. This also applies to the Ultrasound. If you Ultrasound on an even date= colt, but if you foal on odd date still colt as the ultrasound was done first and you are told the sex then.

I have a mare who is due in a few days and I cannot remember which EC I found this in. Just spend the last hour pouring through EC's to find it.

I guess I will just have to take the punt. I want a filly so I will aim for the Odd date and let you know what happens, but this will need more testing to be proven or disproven as I cannot remember which EC I found it in.

Or, maybe due to my mature aged brain, I may have dreampt it, but hey, its worth a try don't you think.

Follow up from above;

Foaled on 17th, odd date = Colt

Will try again when she can breed again. Don't like this 10 month wait between breeding.

BrumbyLodge:

For the Odd/Even ultrasound theory, whoever came up with it, had a hunch, but unfortunately, they were incorrect, because I breed my quarters and have them give birth the same day, and do ultrasounds per every mare, and I get about 50/50 colts and fillies group. Although, some mares do throw more of one gender than the other, the date has nothing to do with it.

Foal genders are completely random. If you just keep breeding, you will eventually get a filly. I know that this can be frustrating. I haven't had the feeling yet as I have just bred my first howrses, but I know that this is a common issue. Just hang in there, and one day you will get a filly.
