Cross Breeding and then to Pure - Skill loss??

Postby Selah117 on Mon Jun 15, 2009 12:48 pm

Could you please read this email below and tell me what you think?

I am just starting out with cross breeding and this gal is telling me that I should use 4 different crosses at the same time b/c if I only use two (like a 50% arab/50% IH) and breed it back to pure that I will lose all that I have gained from the first time I crossed the arab and IH which doesn't make sense if I am using a wand and breeding the twins together they should be gaining the same amount of skills they both have right? They GP will go up as well, yes?

I have heard conflicting info on this subject matter from some cross breeders so I would really like someone who is very knowledgeable and can answer my questions or if they have heard this question answered before. Any insight is appreciated no matter what though.

>> This girl is saying that their skills will decrease with each generation?? She is using the example of the mother and father of the foals I BLUPed but I just told her that she shouldn't take that into consideration since the mother and father of Andromeda (the daughter) had different parents. The foals I get from Andromeda and the stallion (who are twins), those foals that they produce should gain in their skills not decrease as they continue to breed. That would be like saying if you take a purebred w/another purbred 13 star IH with each new foal the skills and GP will decrease. So, please read what she sent me and see if I understand her right or if she is wacked and has no idea of how to cross breed. I am just starting out but somehow I don't think she is right but then again I wanted to ask an experienced player in this area b/c maybe I'm the one that is wacked. lol

Thank you for taking the time to do this. (see email below)

>>> no
>>> you are doing it wrong
>>> you cant introduce other breeds later
>>> and going ping pong back and forth does not work
>>> 1. you want a competition horse?
>>> the BEST you will ever find is in that 1st cross
>>> no other can replace or out do it
>>> some exceptions but they are usually pre pared by breeders on the top teams who have access to the top stock of more than 2 breeds
>>> 2. you want to breed irish hunter crosses back to pure with higher dressage and stamina?
>>> yes you can do this but if you want to introduce other breeds at a later stage this will not work it will interrupt the integrity of what you have started and all your work would have been in vain
>>> you start how you mean to continue
>>> i would like to see the irish hunter with more speed dressage stamina and jump
>>> to do this you start with 4 breeds
>>> irish
>>> paint
>>> hano
>>> arab
>>> you would first cross your paint mare with a hano stud = hano with low jump and high speed
>>> un beat able in jumps
>>> you then have your arab x irish all ready blupped i see in your production
>>> cross those 2 foals
>>> you will now have 1/4 irish 1/4 paint 1/4 hano 1/4 arab you have all the ingredients you need from the start i can do the maths later im tired it is late 2am
>>> what breed this 1/4 foal adopts would depend on the lowest gp of the 4 breeds so if your irish gp is higher there is a good chance the breed will not be irish
>>> then cross that back to pure
>>> you should end up with an irish pure bred with 3%+ jump than pure 3% + stamina than pure 3% + speed than pure 3% - less dressage than pure
>>> it all depends what you want
>>> but you cant breed back to pure and expect magic to happen when introducing an other breed
>>> you are better to start again with a pure and cross or you will lose those 3% gains you have made [/u]

I've also been told to start with one skill such as stamina and focus on increasing that before moving to the 2nd skill I wish to gain.

This girl though thinks you need to do it all at once?? So, I'm getting really confused and I'm not sure this gal knows what she is talking about so I would like some input to know for sure.

Thanks.
